Throughout the Upper Texas Rio Grande Valley, restaurants — from fast-food joints to local cafés — are serving up free wireless Internet to customers, drawing in dozens of college students, Winter Texans and business people hoping to catch up on work or check their e-mail while they grab a bite to eat.
In the past three months, three of the Valley’s largest fast-food restaurant chains have started offering the free Web surfing service to customers with a laptop computer with a wireless modem. So far, wireless Internet is available at several Wendy’s, Dairy Queen and Burger King locations — all far cries from the ultra-hip coffee shops and Internet cafés that formerly owned the market on food services and the Internet.
